How to read
One word at a time, or the whole page. Here’s how to move between them.
Two ways to read

Speed Mode
One word at a time, in one steady place. The red letter is where your eye rests.

Page Mode
The whole page, with your word marked. Take in a passage, then carry on.
In Speed Mode
- TapPause, or carry on. While paused, the words around yours fade in.
- HoldPause on the word you’re looking at.
- Drag sidewaysStep word by word. Left moves on, right goes back.
- Swipe up or downPull the page into view. Let go early to stay in Speed Mode.
Adaptive timing gives long words and punctuation a moment longer. It’s in Settings, under Speed reading.
In Page Mode
- Tap a wordMove your place there. Tap it again to carry on in Speed Mode.
- Hold a wordCarry on from it straight away.
- Tap the edges, or swipe sidewaysTurn the page.
- Swipe up or downBack to Speed Mode, from the word you’re on.

Who’s speaking
Where shall I begin?

Begin at the beginning,
the King said.
Rhythm can colour a novel’s dialogue by who’s speaking, so a conversation reads like a script. Classics marked Speaker colours in Discover show them straight away.
Choose Off, One colour or By speaker under Settings → Dialogue, or from the reader’s settings, where Who’s Speaking lists the characters.
